Ocular Drug Delivery: Targeting the Posterior Segment
ثبت نشده
چکیده
One inch or less. That is the short distance an ocular drug must travel to reach a target site at the back of the eye. Research has come a long way over the past 4 decades in efforts to make this inch-long journey more successful. Delivering ocular drugs to their target tissues often requires them to traverse the fat-water-fat structure of the corneal barrier while ensuring minimum wastage through tear washout and systemic absorption. This is why delivering drugs effectively to the posterior of the eye is a challenge that many companies have aimed to overcome. This installment of the Innovations in Retina column describes recent developments in methods of ophthalmic drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye.

متن کاملOphthalmic Drug Delivery System: Challenges and Approaches
Promising management of eye ailments take off effective concentration of drug at the eye for sufficient period of time. Ocular drug delivery is hampered by the barriers protecting the eye. The bioavailability of the active drug substance is often the major hurdle to overcome. Conventional ocular dosage form, including eye drops, are no longer sufficient to combat ocular diseases. This article r...
متن کاملLight-responsive in situ forming injectable implants for effective drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye.
INTRODUCTION Frequent intravitreal injections are currently the preferred treatment method for diseases affecting the posterior segment of the eye. However, these repeated injections have been associated with pain, risk of infection, hemorrhages, retinal detachment and high treatment costs. To overcome these limitations, light-responsive in situ forming injectable implants (ISFIs) may emerge as...
متن کاملImplantable Posterior Segment Drug Delivery Devices; Novel Alternatives to Currently Available Treatments
The efficacy of drug delivery to the posterior segment by systemic, local or topical routes is hindered by the blood-retinal barrier, tight intercellular junctions and scantly vascularized spaces. Although intravitreal injection has proved effective for delivery of therapeutic agents into the vitreous cavity and retina, it is impractical for frequent or sustained dosing. Intravitreal sustained ...
متن کاملLiposomes and nanotechnology in drug development: focus on ocular targets
Poor drug delivery to lesions in patients' eyes is a major obstacle to the treatment of ocular diseases. The accessibility of these areas to drugs is highly restricted by the presence of barriers, including the corneal barrier, aqueous barrier, and the inner and outer blood-retinal barriers. In particular, the posterior segment is difficult to reach for drugs because of its structural peculiari...
